“Is that what a man looks like?”
- Narrator… or Tyler Durden… Hard to Say
In University, when it finally hit me just how naive I was in High School despite thinking I knew everything (and yet was likely falling under the same trap as NOW I had it all figured out) I started to explore a variety of previously unventured topics which also allowed me to fall into new terminology. For a course in the field of sport sociology, I was researching how cultural expectations impacted those whose stories were not always at the center of the mainstream cycle. Not to overly date myself, but the Internet was very new, so we were at the mercy of the publications that we could find and the information that was becoming available. So forgive my ignorance when I say that this was when I was first discovering how gender and sexuality could impact how we digest and participate in the world of sports, at least in a more profound way as previously I would have either looked at it quickly or not at all. I had written a large paper on the success of women’s professional team based sports leagues in North America and was looking to find another topic that would allow me to alter my viewpoints in an arena that I thought I knew. This led me to a journalist named Mark Simpson. After considerable research I decided that a solid undergrad thesis paper could examine how mainstream male sports were beginning to accept less alpha male characteristics and becoming more tolerant of behaviors that were often associated with homosexuality - however since this was done for commodification and not for the purpose of acceptance that it didn’t impact significantly the perception of those in marginalized groups. Essentially, pro athletes were socially allowed to care about their appearance so they could sell products, but would still likely not be accepted if they were in fact not cis and straight. Looking back it’s odd as I feel as though I was a bit before the trend in examining these types of things, but also very dated in even the language of having a behavior that categorizes a gender or sexuality. Anywho - something to unpack later I suppose.
Regardless, as mentioned this is when I read Mark Simpson as he notoriously coined the term metrosexuality. He has since evolved this concept into Spornosexual (once who combines sports, porn and metrosexual - but again - let’s unpack that at a later date). The poster boy for a metrosexual was David Beckham. At the time, he was as famous for his style as he was for his football. Despite being a young protege and a mainstay on several dominant Manchester United teams (including their famous treble win of 1998/99), being the captain of the English national team, a runner up in the Ballon d’Or in 99, two time runner up to FIFA Player of the Year in 99 and in 01 and being named by Pele in the FIFA 100 as one of the greatest players of all time (as well as having a quite famous free kick that inspired a movie and term to bend it like he did) - he is often both criticized for his inability to bring a World Cup to England (not just his bad as it’s been a while and a lot of players had a crack at this - although not all of them choked in penalties) and his legacy not taken as seriously as he was on the cover of more fashion magazines than football publications (again.. Hard to blame him as they are just way more fashion mags). During his peak, he was linked to and ended up marrying a Spice Girl (very posh of him) which not only was a melding of sports and pop culture but considering the band and the player, it was seen as a collision of iconic British forces. Much of this (although EXTREMELY one sided) can be seen in the recent short series Beckham on Netflix where they examine the toll this took on his personal life and how it may have impacted his actual play on the pitch. However, it seems his biggest flaw was his vanity. He cared so much about what people were saying and writing that it likely influenced his decisions and ultimately his legacy. Not that I’m trying to put everything off until another day, but in my recent deep dive into the career of Brad Pitt, it was Beckham’s name that I kept going back to when looking for a sports comparison. I think the biggest difference though was that Pitt likely cared less, and arguably had even more to offer.
The career of Brad Pitt is tough to put in a pre-set container. He is obviously good looking, even considering Hollywood's high standards of beauty. He is clearly charismatic and seems to be well liked by colleagues and contemporaries. Also vitally, he was as big and famous as anyone in the late 90’s, without clearly wanting fame. Now it should be noted that pretending you didn’t want to be famous was really important in the 90’s and early 00’s as opposed to now where you are considered foolish if you don’t seek fame both obviously and considerably. Rather, you were supposed to look like you were just doing things and being places, and if people showed up and cared - well - I guess that’s ok.
Brad Pitt isn’t alone in this though as there are a handful of actors and famous people who fell under this umbrella. However, I think the thing that always stood out for me is that Brad Pitt was actually talented where I wasn’t as sure some of his contemporaries were. He also didn’t want to be alone on a poster all the time. In Legend of the Fall he was the face you saw first, however he had just done True Romance where he was the cool supporting character Floyd and then followed it up with Se7en where he was certainly a lead but the movie wasn’t exactly a popcorn film. Like most of Pitt’s decisions, I don't think this was accidental. He seemed always interested in the cool role and not necessarily the lead. So for every Troy, he would bookend it with supporting roles in large and small movies alike (In Troy’s case it was in between Ocean’s movies - which are not small scale, but certainly ensemble pieces). Pitt always seemed more at home with a barely audible parky in Snatch rather than some of his contemporaries. For comparison to a previous article, while he was doing Ocean’s movies, Tom Cruise had a Mission: Impossible, Minority Report and Last Samurai run where he seemed not just more comfortable with his face being the center of the movie poster - but this was apparently one of his demands. However for comparison to Beckham and to center Pitt in where I feel he fits into our pop cultural lexicon, I think it hits new heights during the release of Fight Club.
In this I’m not interested in dissecting the movie and looking at it’s connection to incel groups or people who didn’t get the message about cults/guerilla revolution movements of pent up men. I do see how those elements can be problematic, but I also think it completely misses the point. Perhaps another argument I’ll save for another day. What is more vital to the legacy of Pitt is his role both on screen and off during this time. Pitt was cast as Tyler Durdan (or one of the actors playing this person) who is meant to “look like you want to look”. In this, he is perfect. He did look like a lot of people I know wanted to look - act like they thought someone who looked like that should - and even get the fringe benefits of someone in that mold. During the release of the movie he was dating and about to be married to a very famous Friend in Jennifer Aniston - whose cultural importance is often overlooked by people who weren’t alive when getting “The Rachel” was a popular choice at salons. He was living the life that people who wanted to be famous desired to live - and yet - we still didn’t know if he cared. Much like his character, he was the imaginary character many of us had in our heads - despite actually existing. This is why many couldn’t take his roles seriously, as he was their avatar for the ideal version of themselves, or maybe even their gender. It’s the irony of the statement that leads this article. Norton asked him if the picture of the model on a bus ad was what a man was supposed to be like - when the body seen is a slimmer version of the type of body Pitt was rolling with. Pitt’s response (or.. The characters' response at least) that self improvement is masturbation, holds unique value, as again, we see Pitt as someone who doesn’t care that he looks this good. Just as the movie was playing with meta ideas by injecting Pitt into frames and the ongoing splicing of porn into movies that happens near the end (I avoided saying climax here) of the movie as it goes to the credits, so too is it toying with the idea that Pitt is playing an extreme version of what he could be. Brad Pitt is not a revolutionary (that we know of) that is trying to cause mayhem and destroy all credit card records, but if he was - would you join in on the cause as long as he asked you to? Essentially, the movie is asking you to consider how far someone who is charismatic or embodies what you want to be - could get you to go. Would you get in a fight? Would you lose one? Would you destroy a building? Take a life?
However the real life person in Pitt never asked anyone to go this far. He just wanted to be able to continue to play bit parts in good movies. He also likely wanted to make some money, so he would liberally sprinkle in the massive blockbusters in between. He obviously has hubris and enjoyed the attention to a point, however I always thought it was clear that he was in on the joke. So when I heard perspectives from friends that he was a pretty boy who used his looks to be famous, I understood, but I couldn’t disagree more. I think his choices suggest he has had the career he wanted, at least for the most part. He wanted to be able to be both our ideal and our side note. He wanted to be in the cultural lens, but slightly mocking it as a blur on the side while someone else was in focus. Along the way, he wanted to make (either by acting or producing) some movies that might last the test of time. When he was at his worst personally, it reflected in his work and choices professionally (and arguably, visa-versa) but for the most part when you look at his work you see some of the more dynamic (or at least fun) characters, especially in his early career. Now he seems just as happy to produce quality movies and have fun on screen. So ironically, it’s not the 90’s version of himself that maybe should have been looked up, but how he is choosing to finish things that deserves more admiration. Legacy becomes more important as you age and consider what impact you might have on the world. For most of us, our world is small in scale, but for him it may actually be the world. Either way, years later, I’m still not completely convinced he cares.
Once upon a time in Hollywood… ain’t that the truth.

The rampant D jokes aren’t landing.
The purple jumpsuit is a Bullock staple. She seems to like an excuse to wearing things that are scandalous and “out of character” to justify her wearing something skimpy or revealing.

The Old Game - great last line. Winner is the one that doesn’t blow his brains out. He gets a refrigerator
Random Thoughts:
Opening scene is admittingly trying a bit hard to be cutting/cool

Because it’s the third one and they made the villain over the top - you kind of ignore most of the plot holes. I feel like you either have to be super tight with the caper - or do that.
They were drinking in almost every scene in the first one. Now, not as much. They are older after all.
Scott Caan not elaborating at all when the order came from the actual five diamond guy was way underselling.
This is how guys die or go to jail.
I like when they need someone to hit on Sponder they automatically say Pitt… and when Damon says he is in, they act like he can’t pick anyone up. Crazy considering how many People Mag Sexiest there are in the room.
Low key tricky to show the financials of the heist - in that case - this one knocks it out. Only part of the heist that is at a higher level really. Visually, great. Conceptually, a bit limited. Still fun though.
Great contempt face from Clooney.
How would the Gilroy not also work on Damon a bit?
Even a decade later - and the download would be within a minute rather than the extended time it took.
Why do they seem to hate Turk?
11 makes sense. Snake eyes doesn’t. Unless everyone on the table knew.
Sponder and Lenny have been just sitting on the couch for that long? Might be the biggest reach of the whole movie.
They also didn’t need to spike the ball at the end.
So people just take other people’s money - hit the jackpot on the slots - and then don’t make any effort to run down the person that gave them the cash to at least give them a taste of it?
David Paymer is listed as the VUP.
Random Thoughts:
Very 90’s and for me super nostalgic start with the actual record scratch. Also very trendy to the mid-late 90’s with the opening sequence being tied to the plot. See Se7en for the same idea.
Super weird walking into a movie that you watch so many times at a certain point in your life and then haven’t revisited in probably about 20 years. Especially one that seems to have generated a great deal of either discussion or criticism.
With a gun barrel between your teeth you speak only in vowels. The first of many quotes I thought was very clever at the time.
I know this because Tyler knows this.
Everythings a copy of a copy of a copy - followed by the first Tyler spotting and the shot panning out of the garbage talking about planet Starbucks and University me was all in.
The Ikea shot living room was bang on. I still connect to having the thoughts about caring about furniture - especially when I have an empty fridge.
The actual thought of going to a cancer therapy session is pretty gutting now that I’m older.
Meat Loaf - unreal.
Listening to Bob’s story now and how his kids don’t want anything to do with him, it really hits me how bad of a dude he likely was.
I was the warm little center … It's lines like this that make me wonder why this movie is so attached to incel groups. It is openly criticizing and making commentary on how his feelings and lack of sleep are partially based on his horrible nature and narcissism.
I mean Marla is supposed to be a horrible person - but it’s clear - he is worse.
We are 30 minutes in and I already have so many quotes that I have likely said or thought of in my lifetime. The ass or crotch dilemma goes through my mind constantly.
Three pitchers of beer and you still can’t ask. I’ve had that litmus test before too.
I’m now for sure seeing the concerns about this being for incel groups. I still argue that this isn’t the actual point of the movie - but again - I get it. Funny though. I don’t know if I see that much of a difference between this culture and UFC. At least, before it gets revolutionary.
A bif off though as a guy being knocked out is different than the guy smiling after getting nailed in the face so many times. That’s a bit ideal.
When you know the end, the Marla part is especially heartbreaking and upsetting.
Man.. so many amazing quotes. This might be Pitt at the height of his cultural powers. Very few can pull this off.
I feel like the fat making soap was the idea that the writer first fell.
I think Pitt is the reason people assume it’s an incel movie. He is so charismatic that the whole time, you kinda want to be him. And considering that his lines are fantastic and he looks the way he does - he is more charming than he should be considering what he does to people. The first time this comes up is when he burns Norton, but you still kinda like him. His message is horrific - but because he’s likable - you give him the benefit of doubt. This is the point though. Cult leaders have to have followers.
I like the pick and fight and lose part. It’s true, so many people will avoid a fight at all times. So starting one realistically would be tough. Change of tone and music as well - Fincher is so good.
It’s interesting the mix of when it’s Norton and when it’s Pitt fighting.
The used flight stubs were meant to be found by him so he would figure it out. Not sure I caught that beforehand.
The ending still hits.
Random Thoughts:
You pay all this money to get Fassbender and Cruz - and yet you start with them covered in sheets in a way that sounds like it’s a voice over.
What a start to a movie. Sets the stage quick that this is the kind of movie they used to make in the 80’s… at least I think that’s what they want you to think.
In an odd way it paints the picture of what they want you to think about Fassbender in general. Also - her husband is working in this movie. Actors are weird.
What a freaking cast. And Ridley Scott is directing. And barely anyone knows about it? That is either awesome or is a horrible sign.
The accents are not spot on. Fassbender’s is odd and the Dutch dude in A-dam is not fantastic. Could be a better start. Diaz also.. But her accent is expected to be bad. The tats on the shoulders is an odd character trait.
Bloody Marys in a decanter… interesting choice. Realistic though.
“Women don’t want to fix them, they just want to be entertained. The worst thing you can do to a woman is bore them.”
I feel as though Bardem is just giving away the whole movie. He talks about someone who tries to go into business for themselves and gets served. He talks about moral dilemmas and that he will have some questions to answer if he keeps going and then explains the neck tie thing that will for sure kill someone in the movie.
All the foreshadowing. “I intend to love you until I die. Me First.”
What do I do or what does one do?
You don’t know someone until you know what they want.
Pitt is all quotes. I see why he wanted to do this movie.
Try to watch Rosie Perez walk into a movie and not feel as though you made a good choice in watching this.
Diaz and the car. I don’t even know where to start.
Lots of heads coming off in this one.
Also - he is not a cool enough character to get that nickname.
The dude has cheetahs in the backseat… why didn’t they come into play?
They don’t really have Mexicans come across as fantastic…
Funny as Cruz was the crazy plus one in Blow that “cost” him everything. In this one, Diaz is trying to one up her.. And she is oddly less likable.
Seems like the whole movie is about choices, grief and loss… and there is a good movie hidden in here somewhere.. A better screenwriter was essential. Needed to have a rewrite and a twist at the end. Diaz can’t win. She’s not cool or clever enough. Should have been something else and the movie would have been better received.
If Cruz would have somehow been part of the mastermind behind it and Diaz was just a part of it… or her co-planner… then it would have hit the landing.
Random Thoughts:
Very 90s opening. Narrator telling you what you need to know and introducing the main characters. Also trying to be clever.
What do I know about diamonds?
I like the jumping of stories.. That makes it harder to notice plot holes.
Pitt is perfect casting. He nails the accent - he is likable and funny - but he is also pretty ripped so you believe the notion that he can one punch people.
It’s clever to place the movie in the “underbelly” so when people talk about the idea of parkies, the natural throwing of boxing events and people being eaten by pigs - we just have to believe all these things to be normal.
The head (Brick Top) asks a lot of rhetorical questions - you don’t like that do you?
Sit down and shut up you fat bald fuck - great follow up to the snap shots for when Ari flies.
The botched robbery is just fantastic. And the needle drops on all the more violent scenes are such a staple. Super influential.
I remember the first time I watched this - I was completely surprised by the incompetent driver knocking out Frankie four fingers - randomness over plans. A good way of summarizing the movie. Having him killed when he was one of the few actors I knew of heading into this movie was also a staple as to why I love this movie.
Do you take sugar? No thank you Turkish. I’m sweet enough.
The Pitt look of vengeance is another reason why he is perfect casting.
The stereotypes are a bit heavy here.
You should never underestimate the predictability of stupidity.
Random Thoughts:
I’m going to save my long version of this as a Tarantino themed little guy is likely in the works - but just focusing on the Brad Pitt of it all left me with two large reactions:
1 - We just let it slide that he killed his wife and beat up Bruce Lee (well… Twitter didn’t but most people in real life did) and
2 - Can anyone take off a shirt while holding everyone’s attention but still seeming like they don’t care. Which leads me to my actual final thought:
There are a couple of roles in his career that only Pitt could pull off. This is one of them.
Random Thoughts:
Same as above, but I have something brewing for this too. But if I’m going to say that the previous movie is a performance that only Pitt could pull off - I may also have to include this. Others could have done it, but I don’t think anyone does it better and with more quiet charisma.
Also, I was not feeling great a little while ago and my partner put this movie on. Before the movie I couldn’t focus without feeling like I was going to be sick - but by the time Jeremy Giambi gets fired I was fully into it and feeling amazing. Long story short - My partner knows me and this movie saves lives.
Oceans 11 (Pod)
There was a time and a place in my life when this was a nearly weekly watchable. That time was University. Back when I thought robbing a casino was a realistic career choice and I loved the concept of gambling before I really knew what it meant.
In a modern world, wouldn’t this inspire at least another spin off (I realize there is one more in the works aside from the Ocean’s 8 project) and at least one 10 episode Netflix series. Don’t you want to know about Rusty’s tattoos or Basher’s side hustles? I also want to know why and how they went to Belize.
The suspense of Yen in the vault was completely contrived. How much freaking bandage did that guy need on his hand? Way overdone. He shut his hand in a door, he didn’t get it blown off in the trenches of Ypres.
I’m deleting many of my reactions as they exist in the video that will be attached to this (and also to the fantasy football season of 23..) but man, this is chemistry defined.
I will argue that this movie is the reason my generation likes gambling. Rounders made us think we could play poker, but this movie made us want to be in Vegas. Whenever I’m mad at a dealer, I still remember Clooney tipping after winning just one hand in an opening scene as it changed the way I think of gambling karma.
I can’t count how many times I’ve said “All Red” in an actual poker game in my life. Same could be said with: “Whisky.. And a whiskey”.
A very picky, nitpick - the bartender never would have asked Pitt to repeat what he just said. He would have nodded and smiled as that’s what you do as a bartender when it’s loud. But had he not, Pitt couldn’t have made the running away with his wife line and then we may have not liked him quite as much right out of the gate, so it gets a pass.
The one high and low of shots:
Worst shot: Clooney reading the paper. This one is pug fugly, but it’s quick so we let it slide.
Best: The car ride with Pitt and Clooney. All great filmmakers will include a shot that shows off something in every movie they do. This is Soderbergh playing around with things.
If you have a moment, look at IMDB facts of the movie to find out that Pitt’s run down of what the heist could consist of to see what they all mean. It really was the greatest Ella Fitzgerald.. ever.
I still answer, “Only in the morning”, every time I asked if I’m suicidal regardless of how inappropriate that is.
Other Media Consumed:
Rewatchales: Moneyball, Ocean’s 11, Ocean’s 12, True Romance, Inglorious Bastards, Once Upon a Time… , Se7en, Fight Club, Mr. & Mrs. Smith.
